The Lucena Karatedo Association (LKA) is a martial arts group in Lucena City that trains people interested in learning karatedo.

Recognized by the Philippine Karatedo Association, World Karate Federation, and the World Organizers of Martial Arts, LKA karateka (practitioners) regularly participate in regional, national, and international competitions.

Some examples of these include the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Collegiate Meet, the upcoming 26th National Karatedo Championships, and invitational tournaments in Singapore, Hongkong, and India where the group gets invited to every now and then.

Training

A serious sport that requires commitment and hard work, the training is composed of  daily (except Sundays) two and a half-hour sessions conducted in any of the group’s training locations –YMCA in Isabang, Sybang Building in Quezon Avenue, and Greg Street in Alpsville Subdivison — with training personally handled by Shihan (Senior Instructor) Rolly Mendoza, a 6th Dan Black Belt licensed instructor who serves as the Regional Director of the Philippine Karatedo Association with jurisdiction over the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon.

Training Regimen

Training regimen depends on the skill level of the trainee. White and yellow belters’ (beginners) training usually includes basic punching, kicking, and blocking along with some basic kata (form) lessons while more skilled trainees like brown and black belters practice more advanced kata.

Trainees

The LKA takes pride in its diverse group of trainees. From kids as young as 7 years of age to adults past their 40’s, there’s no such thing as too young, too old, or too frail for the group which openly accepts both female and male applicants.

Safety Concerns

Safety is something that the group takes seriously, so aside from limiting the force used during technique demonstrations, trainees are also made to wear protective gear prior to sparring sessions. This includes face mask, gloves, shin guard, and chest padding for females. Participants who do wish to undergo tougher training are free to tell the instructor so.

Training Packages

Regular sessions composed of daily (except Sundays) karate lessons — the schedule of which depends on the trainee’s preference — cost Php 800.00 per month.

Enrolling in the summer Karatedo clinic, on the other hand, costs P2,800.00 inclusive of the uniform.

Set to last for three months, the Karatedo clinic include twice a day sessions of a combination of Karatedo, Arnis, tonfa, bou, and nunchucks lessons with focus on the practical applications of all five.
