Ugh. Back-to-school. The summer went by WAY too fast.

It’s that time of year again—one that’s filled with excitement and more than a few jitters. Don’t just assume a great year is going to fall into your lap. You have to work to make it happen. Here are some tips to help you stay float and really thrive during the school year. Most of these may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at the amount of people who don’t actually apply it into their lives. Whether you’re already a walking organizer or a professional procrastinator, the time to plan ahead is before school starts.

Before the First Day

Before heading out the first day of school, take a moment to breathe. Your high school years will fly past and soon you will be heading off to college. Take time to meet new people, participate in after school activities and study hard.

Make friends

Find people who pursue common interests with you, ones whom you can be comfortable and just be yourself with. Cherish those friends you make who are positive influences in your life, and do your best to be a positive influence in theirs. Always keep in mind to surround yourself with people you can grow with in a positive route.

Obtain and use a planner/organizer

Use an academic planner or organizer to keep track of your assignments, deadlines, and appointments. By having all this information in one place, you’ll know exactly where to look to find out what you need to do.  You can even use your planner to schedule your tasks and set a study schedule. Write things down so you don’t forget them.

Practice proper time management

Learn to prioritize academics, athletics, family time, social time, spiritual time, etc. and let go of the least important things in your life. You have to balance and line up the different aspects, especially if you have a lot of extracurricular coupled with rigorous academics. Let go of certain things to get the most important things done. Remind yourself that it’s okay; you’re only human.

Be resourceful

You can’t always anticipate everything; hence, you have to be prepared. You can go to your school library if you need help in your homework or group project. If your school doesn’t have a one, you can always visit the Lucena City Library where you can gain a broader access to information and reading materials that can’t be found on the Internet. Obtaining personal connections and smart strategies can leverage you to higher ground, so don’t be afraid to take risks and use ‘em up! Always remember: The more resources, the better.

Know your passion and get involved.

This is a time in your life to figure out what kinds of things interest you, so  try to be more active and find out what ignites a passion in you! This is a great way to meet new people, and joining certain clubs and activities you’re interested in will open up a whole new world. You can also gain leadership opportunities, get the chance to go to competitions, volunteer, and more! Be with people who share common interests with you, instead of wasting your time trying to be someone that you’re not.

Get as much sleep as possible.

Having an adequate amount of sleep is imperative to a successful high school career—and even to a lifelong career. Students who usually sleep for less than eight hours a night may have trouble staying awake or alert during the day. In addition to school work, if you plan to participate in after-school activities or sports, you will need to rest up to do your best. Keep in mind that a good night’s sleep is essential for your health.

 Good luck! 🙂
