Lucena City Library is a public library located at the 2nd Floor of the Old City Hall Building. It caters to the public in general, providing them different services like library information research and free use of internet on the Cybrary Section.

History

The Municipal Library of Lucena (then named Filemon Perez Memorial Library) was established on July 01, 1952, under the administration of the late Mayor Honorio Abadilla. When Lucena was inaugurated as a City on August 20, 1961, it automatically became the Lucena City Library.

On August 30, 1983, all of the Library’s collection had been burned down to ashes when the City Hall building was totally destroyed by fire. After that tragedy, the Library was once again rehabilitated along with the City Hall building in order to continue to give library service to the public.

City Social Welfare Development Officer, Mrs. Lourdes G. Ruanto, in collaboration with the City Librarian, made a project study for the City Library’s Modernization. Mrs. Ruanto then submitted the proposal study the Rotary International – Rotary Foundation. Then after one (1) year of constant communication with the foundation together with the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Lucena, Philippines, the project has been approved.

On July 13, 2009, Humanitarian Grant MGA No. 69019, RY 2008-2009 was awarded to the City Library by the Rotary International-Rotary Foundation international partners, Rotary Clubs of Hawaii, USA RI District 5000 thru the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Lucena, Philippines District -3820, by providing the Library with 15 computer units and 1 photocopy machine.

With this grant, the renovation of the City Library’s stockroom to an Internet Room was immediately approved by Mayor Ramon Talaga, Jr. He also provided roll-up blinds and two (2) air-conditioning units for the room which is now called the Cybrary Section.
