Question and Answer:

How long have you been working as a DJ?
About 17 years na…

How did you get your start as a DJ?
Way back 1995, 96.7 Sigaw DWLM-FM was needing one, so I applied.. Underwent training, took the midnight slot (from 12mn to 4am) and got their nods. The rest is history.

Has it always been your dream to become a DJ? Why or why not?
Yeah. Refer to my high school yearbook and you will see the phrase after my name written “to be a DJ.” Music is my first love. Maybe If I were not a DJ, I might be in a band.

Do you still see yourself working in this field several years from now? Why or why not?
I’d love to, but I’m afraid I should change my name from Papa to Lolo.. Hahahaha! 😀

What’s the most memorable thing that happened to you on-air?
Maybe those technical bloopers when I was just training when I was playing the wrong side of Cyndi Lauper’s LP… and it’s worth remembering moments like when I was conducting radio interviews with famous celebrities like Francis Magalona, Parokya Ni Edgar, Yano, Salbakuta, Alamid, etc. plus being interviewed by Nikki Gil at MYX on national TV… Wow.

What do you consider to be the highlights of your career so far?
Well, in my earlier career, being number one jock twice in the official survey was something for me… and maybe Talk To Papa. Iyong nakakabit sa pangalan mo iyong program.

How do you keep your listeners tuned in to your program?
I guess sincerity on the air.. Kung isinasapuso mo ginagawa mo, mararamdaman ng listeners iyon. For every jock talk, you make them smile or even laugh or sometimes you talk directly to their hearts…

What do you think are the challenging parts of being a DJ?
For me, the challenging part of being a DJ is how you can keep them listening to you without getting burned out.. In my case, how can I keep their ears glued while merging the old and new generations of listeners…

How about the best part?
The best part is – you are a local personality and you feel loved by your listeners.

What can you tell other people who are also aspiring to become a DJ?
First, you should be a music lover. Second, you must be prepared to set aside dreams of financial success just like any other yuppies. Likewise, you need to have empathy for different types of people; moreover, you should be a radio lover. Emulate, imitate, and create your own personality. Practice, Practice, and practice.
