Question and Answer:
How long have you been working as a DJ?
3 years (Since 2010)

How did you get your start as a DJ?
I applied. I went through the screening process – delivering adlib/news, writing scripts etc.

Has it always been your dream to become a DJ? Why or why not?
Yeeeeessss! Not just a DJ but a radio announcer who doesn’t just play songs but delivers news, commentaries etc. This desire sprouted when I was in grade 3. I knew at that very moment that radio is the world I want to be in when I grow up. Then eventually, I got fascinated also with the way FM DJs talk and laugh, so from there, my desire and passion to be a radio announcer-slash-DJ someday became more intense. I love RADIO, I love informing people and I love music! Radio always reminds me of my childhood kase. I grew up in my father’s province in Bicol and there was no TV there kasi nasa bundok talaga, so radio was my only entertainment and since grade 3, I started practicing how to talk, laugh and deliver news the way radio broadcasters do.

Do you still see yourself working in this field several years from now? Why or why not?
I would love to be part of the radio industry kahit lola na, kung keri ko mag-ala-Tiya Dely Magpayo, why not? But given a chance to have a much bigger opportunity in other field, I will grab it, but I would still want to be a DJ, not as work but bilang passion na lang talaga.

What’s the most memorable thing that happened to you on-air?
Interviews with some celebs and Kwentong Barangay days with Papa Tonyo and Papa Joey! That was actually the most memorable because, the three of us are so makulit so masaya talaga magprograma with them. And of course, I just can’t forget the blunders., bloopers. Bigtime kaengotans like forgetting to turn the mic off which happened not just once! Salita ako ng salita ng kung ano-ano, naka-on pa pala ‘yung mic. It was too late when I realized it. I received so many text messages reiterating the things I said! So embarrassing! Hahaha!

What do you consider to be the highlights of your career so far?
Being MAMA BEA, highlight na yun for me.

How do you keep your listeners tuned in to your program?
By being spontaneous. By not trying so hard. By being happy amidst a bad day. It is important that a DJ always sounds alive and happy. People listen to the radio to be happy and not to be emotionally-afflicted, so everytime I turn the mic on, my goal is to radiate happiness.

What do you think are the challenging parts of being a DJ?
dealing with listeners, especially with the irate and demanding ones. Being a DJ is like being a customer service representative who doesn’t have the right to make face and to be annoyed no matter how irritating the situation is. Sometimes you have to pretend that you’re not pissed and pretending for me is very difficult. But listeners are listeners, and as a DJ I learned to be more patient. I have to love and understand my listeners no matter how irate some of them are. It’s true that we don’t have to please people, pero pag DJ ka parang obligasyon mo na ngitian at pansinin lahat ng tao kahit di mo kilala. Parang artista lang, na kahit masakit ang tiyan o kaya najejebs, ngiti lang ng ngiti.

How about the best part?
We all know naman na pag DJ ka, you get special treatment from other people. You are considered as a local celebrity because people will ask to have a photo and authograph of you. Even the ones who hated you before will befriend you. But for me, hindi yun ang best part. The best part of being a DJ is having the opportunity to inspire and make other people happy. I’m happy when my listeners are happy. Being an ordinary DJ may not be financially fulfilling, but there is something about being a DJ that gives me a sense of fulfilment and happiness that I can never get from the corporate world or any field that offers a lot of money.

What can you tell other people who are also aspiring to become a DJ?
PRACTICE A LOT. READ A LOT. KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR LISTENERS LIVES. LISTEN TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC. BE SPONTANEOUS. Pag DJ ka, hndi kelangan magpakyut. Hindi kelangan ang pagiging maarte. Hindi kelangan ang pagiging malandi. Hindi kelangan na ingglesera at maging sosyal . Just be SIMPLE and NATURAL. People will love you more if you are spontaneous. In the radio industry, nothing is permanent so PREPARE FOR THE WORST. You are only as good as your last performance so give your best shot everyday. BE HUMBLE always and most of all, BE ETHICAL – never ever use your popularity for personal gain.
