Question and Answer:

How did you become a DJ?
I remember back when I was on my last years in high school, I used to imitate some DJ’s, so I started liking it a bit. One time, while hanging around the house, I heard from one of the stations that there’s some kind of a DJ audition. I went there, but it was already a day too late. Hehe! But what the heck, I had my resume done, so I passed it to other stations, and that’s when I started to spin music for the first one.

When did you start?/How young were you when you get started?
1998. Uhm, not that young anymore back then. Hehe!

Is it really your dream to become a DJ? Why or why not?
Frankly, it was not one of my dreams, though i was interested in it before I became one; but as time goes by, you get the feeling that a field may be fit for you, so you call it not a dream but a reality; and so, you get to love the things that you do as well.

How long do you see yourself in this field?
In this field, sometimes you’re not the one who decides how long you’re gonna stay, or whether you’re going to stay on your own free will or not. Sometimes, some other profession, field, or interest will take up your time; so some things need to somehow go lower in your list of priorities.

What’s the most memorable thing that happened to you on-air?
Every single thing is memorable when there’s this feeling that the listeners appreciate your words and that they can relate to your thoughts, experiences, sentiments, and advice; but of course, I also appreciate the occasional negative feedback as well. Hehe!

Highlights of your career so far?
I don’t take note of that, sorry. All I remember as highlights of my career are the lives that I touched one way or another.

How do you keep your listeners tuned-in to your program?
I just become myself, an imperfect person and DJ with similar listeners — and the result is awesome. No pretensions.

What’s the worst thing in being a DJ?
Being misinterpreted for whatever reason by the listeners. That DJ’s are snobs, too high-profile, has bloated egos, and some other misunderstandings regarding our work when we are on and even off-air; but once a listener gets to know a DJ personally, they realize that we are also just humans. Some are even so surprised at how simple a DJ can be in personal conversations.

How about the best?
Maybe almost the same as the memorable things I’ve mentioned above. It’s also all about touching lives and living up to a DJ’s responsibility as a bringer of entertainment, information, and all the other good stuff. Once a DJ delivered these effectively, he/she is making the most of being a DJ or media personality.

Your advice for the aspiring DJ’s
Respect ALL people from ALL walks of life. Even though you think that you’re rising up, plant your feet firmly on the ground and do not forget your family, friends, your followers, and especially God. Be humble, take note of even the smallest things that others did or gave to you along your journey. Follow orders. If you think you have a bright idea, wait for it to blossom then give it a shot. If you fail, that just means that you have the opportunity to adjust things and the gift to try again. If you fail again, pray for the wisdom to know when to stop or when to continue. It’s a big world out there; there lots of things that you can do with your life. Be good to others, and most of them would be the same to you. Enjoy every moment and be thankful for it.

Message to your listeners:
Thank you for the wonderful 15 years of listening. To those that I may have offended in one way or another and to those I’ve done fault with or without my knowledge, my apologies. To those that appreciated and learned to like DJ Benji, thank you so much. You all don’t know how much I humbly appreciate every moment we’ve all shared. Spread the love, and let’s rock n’ roll!
