Just like any other profession, a firefighter’s job is never an easy one. It requires proper training, presence of mind, and a sense of selflessness.

They are the ones who always have to be ready to risk their lives to save others — rushing to the scene wherever and whenever they are needed without expecting anything in return. Sometimes, they even have to sacrifice the time that they are supposed to spend with their families to ensure that the public stays safe.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to thank these noble professionals for their service, then join us as we pay tribute to Lucena City’s very own Fire Marshal as she talks about her job, her experiences and the things that she observed while working in Lucena, and fire prevention tips that we all should observe to avoid fire incidents.

How long have you been working as a fire marshal?

Actually, I’ve just recently accepted this opportunity and I’m currently on my fourth month, but I’ve already been in the service for 17 years.

What are the different trainings that you had to undergo before you finally became a fire marshal?

I went through a three-year training course to become a firefighter. Others can opt for the six- month training, but with the three-year course, you can acquire a higher position after graduating.

What are the different places that you have assigned to so far?

Manila and Lucena.

How many fire incidents have you handled so far?

I have been assigned to administrative duties for a long time because of my previous background in accounting, so my experience in actual rescues is a bit limited, especially here in Lucena City where cases of fire incidents are very rare because of the awareness of the public. I have worked on a couple of fire cases as a desk officer during the span of my career, though.

What is the most important lesson that you have learned from your current job?

Perseverance. I believe that there are no easy jobs, but if you have the determination, you can make your job easier.

As the City Marshall of BFP Lucena, what do you think we still lack when it comes to fire prevention? How would you address them?

In my opinion, the lack of fire extinguishers in some houses and establishments is an issue, though I understand that some residents could not afford one due to financial matters; that instead of buying a fire extinguisher, they would rather buy food for their family.

There are still hard-headed establishment owners, however, that do not have fire extinguishers even though they can afford them – a problem that we are trying to resolve right now.

As of now, BFP Lucena could not afford to give fire extinguishers away, but we offer lots of free seminars and an open house where we teach everyone to be well-prepared for fire incidents. Because of that, I am very happy to tell everyone that Lucena City has fewer fire incident cases now compared to previous years.

Summer is just around the corner, what are the different reminders that you would like to tell every Lucenahin?

Since summer involves hot weather, we tend to overuse our cooling fans, electric fans, and air- conditioning systems at home. I have nothing against advertisements reassuring people that using electrical appliances for extended periods of time causes no harm, but as the saying goes, even robots that worked for several hours need some rest too.

What I am trying to say is that we should be responsible in using gadgets and electrical appliances. For instance, when charging them, do not leave them when you are about to sleep or leave the house. Also, do not plug in as many appliances or gadgets as you can in a switchboard because it can cause a short circuit and eventually start a fire.

What advice can you share to all aspiring youth who would like to be a City Marshal someday?

Just do what you love. Achieving goals takes struggles and overcoming challenges, but never give up on them. Be patient! There are no steps that lead straight to the top position, everybody have to take the lowest one first. When the time comes for you to shine, make sure you make full use of it,but never leave your family behind, because they are priceless. Do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Life is an adventure, let it take you to different places that would make you feel alive and happy. Continue striving for success and inspire people to do the same. 🙂

Salute to all firefighters out there! Happy 50th Fire Prevention Month, Lucenahins! 🙂
