Boxing is one of the most popular sports in the Philippines, so it’s a bit of a surprise that we rarely hear of any boxers in the city. Luckily for us, we stumbled upon a professional trainer who trains people interested in boxing while doing some research on a related article. Below is an overview of what we found out about him and his boxing classes.

Instructor

Rodelo Merano is a former pro-boxer who fought professionally from 1983-1985. During his stint as a pro-boxer, he represented the Philippines in boxing matches held in Japan, Korea, and China to name a few. After he retired from the ring, he started working as a licensed trainer recognized by the Games and Amusement Board.

When he’s not at the gym training the athletes under his wing, he also takes part in promoting fights.

Trainees

Coach Merano believes that boxing is for everyone; therefore, anyone is welcome to come to the gym and try the sport for themselves regardless of age and background. Examples of this are the two females he currently trains and some of the teenagers he previously trained who also fought professional matches for a time.

Training

The kind of training trainees undergo under Coach Merano’s guidance depends on their strength and stamina. For example, those who pack a heavy punch are usually placed on thrice-a-week training sessions which usually last for one hour. Those whose punches have been deemed to be a little on the lighter side, on the other hand, are placed on more intensive daily sessions that usually last for two hours.

For heavy punchers, training mostly consists of sparring sessions and footwork exercises while light punchers are usually made to lift weights first to increase their strength.

Trainees who have low endurance are put on roadwork training, sometimes while wearing weights, to improve their stamina.

Training Fees

Training Fee is pegged at PHP 150.00 per one-hour session; however, for those who have trouble motivating themselves to come to training after a hard day’s work or for other personal reasons, he occasionally challenges them to pay 750 for one whole week in advance to encourage them to come unless they want their payments to be forfeited.

Contact Information
