Lucena City may not be the official world record holder of the Largest Human Peace Sign, but we’re sure to take pride by being a part of the history in having the most number of participants that have joined in this category.

The largest human peace sign that was recorded so far was set by the people of Ithaca, New York during the Ithaca Festival on June 23, 2008 with 5, 814 people participating in the said event.

But on October 7, 2009, about 10,000 students of Quezon National High School have gathered and formed the largest or biggest human peace sign in the world for the celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Non-Violence, thus unofficially breaking Ithaca’s record.

This record-breaking event was made possible through the efforts of the International Organization, World Without Wars and Violence, who conducted the first World March for Peace and Non-Violence. They started their march in New Zealand on October 2, 2009 and ended it on January 2, 2010 in Punta de Vacas, Aconcagua, Argentina. The Philippines was the third country on their list and during their stay here they visited Manila, Lucena City, and Zamboanga City. The delegates of World Without Wars and Violence, together with their Filipino partners, Ang Komunidad and Ang Kapisanan ng Tao Bilang Sentro, continued on with their programs in the Philippines despite their postponed activities in Pasig due to Typhoon Ondoy.

This gigantic peace sign was formed as the the students descended from the bleachers to the field and marched to the tune of Tropical Depression’s “Kapayapaan” and the Beatles’ “Imagine”. The formation was choreographed by the MAPEH department head of QNHS, Mrs. Concepcion Alcantara. This served as the highlight of the program for the World March for Peace and Non-Violence here in Lucena City. Prior to this, the international team marched from Perez Park to Alcala Sports Complex along with some LGU Officers and NGO’s. Performances from the Sacred Heart College Violin Ensemble, and Quesinhayaw Cultural Troupe of Quezon National High School was also included in the said program.
