The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) is a government agency tasked with informing the public of the latest projects and activities of the government.
Directly supervised by the Presidential Communication Operations Office (formerly known as the Office of the Press Secretary), the main duties of the agency are to produce daily press releases related to the performance of duties of the different departments of the government, particularly the Office of the President, and to submit situational reports detailing the peace and order; disaster; and weather status of the area under their jurisdiction with the aim of consolidating these information for public dissemination either through SMS (text) updates or electronic publication (websites).
Locally, they are responsible for maintaining profiles of all existing media organizations — including print, broadcast, and online media — as well as sharing resources with them for the purpose of information dissemination. They are also the ones responsible for media accreditation which allows media organization to attend and participate in official press conferences and other similar government-related events.
Every now and then, the agency is also tapped by other government agencies to conduct surveys on their behalf, the results of which are used to plan and implement future government projects.
