According to the popular folklore, the name Lucban was derived from pomelo or lucban tree, where the three hunters from the neighboring town, namely Marcos Tigla, Luis Gumba and Lucas Nañawa, rested after they lost their way while hunting some animals at the foot of Mt. Banahaw. After seeing some good omen there, the trio settled in that place and named it Lucban.

The residents of Lucban accepted the story as true as Marcos Tigla was recorded as the first gobernadorcillo of the town in 1596. And after that, Lucas Nañawa took over and become gobernadorcillo for four years.
