3 Simple New Year’s Resolution Ideas that could Change your Life

NewYearsResolutionsChanging is harder than doing nothing.

So when you feel motivated to change something like most people do on the first days of a new year, GRAB IT!

A new year’s resolution may have been meant to be broken for you, but if you pick 1 of these 3 simple ideas, we might just be able to stick one through.

1. Do 1 thing new each month of the year.

Have you ever heard the saying that “Growth happens outside your comfort zone”?

So let’s try and step out at least once a month this year.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Try a different type or genre than what you’re used to. If you love watching telenovelas, try watching korean variety shows, reality TV shows or documentaries some days of the month. For music, listen to or perform something classical, dance punk or death metal if you’ve always been into country music. Or you can try a different cuisine for that matter too.
  • Take up a new class. There are many classes offered here in Lucena City, from Baking to Zumba Dance classes. You can pick up an online course if you prefer to do it at home.
  • Change your exercise routine. Hit the gym, join a fun run, walk in the mornings, do yoga, bike!

Remember, you don’t have to do something big every single month. One month, you can just try using the mouse with your non-dominant hand, which I did.

The key here is to become used to doing something new. Being comfortable with the new can help you embrace change easily. And you get to try a whole lot of fun things too!

2. Watch 1 personal development video every week.

If you pick this, you can start with 10 or 15-minute videos. I highly recommend Brendon Burchard’s video below.

If you have a particular area that you want to focus on like health or personal finance, then start with that. You don’t really have to do anything afterwards, just let the teachings sink in. Although of course, if you want to watch a related video after or put what you learn to practice immediately, then go do that.

The idea here is just to get in the habit of exploring things that can help you grow. The easiest I can think of is in the form of watching 1 video per week. If you prefer, you can listen to podcasts or read books instead. That’s up to you.

What you need to do is assign 1 day of the week (I started with Monday nights) so you don’t have to think about scheduling it weekly. And you cannot watch, say 3 videos in advance, just so you can watch the 4th one after 3 weeks – otherwise it will be a little difficult to practice and it’s not really a habit.

So, come 2017, you’d have learned at least 52 new things that I hope helped you, not to mention new positive habits that I’m sure you have picked up throughout the year.

3. Organize 12 things, 1 for each month of the year.

OrganizeDo you always spend time looking for your keys? Or can you never find a receipt you need to claim for warranty? Are you always searching for something you lost in the house, at the office or in your bag? Then we can go with this.

If you always lose things in the house, it’s usually because they don’t have a specific place for you to put them. So the first thing to do for this resolution is to assign a home for the thing that you want to organize.

Your home keys, for example, can be assigned to a hook near your entrance door or on a container (like a fancy saucer) on top of a table near the door. All duplicate keys can be sorted out in one afternoon – separated and labeled (by location) then all placed in a small box or drawer.

The idea here is to always put that thing you wish to organize, like your home keys in this example, to the same assigned place every day. And have a system in place for the any changes related to it, like the occasional new set of keys and replacement of old keys.

By simply tackling 12 items, you’ll save hours of what used to be the time it takes for you to find them. The extra hours can now be used on things that really matter to you.

There are all sorts of organizing hacks that you can find all over the net. I’m sure you can find something for what you want to organize. For the warranties, I loved Alejandra’s tip in this organizing video. I didn’t label each sheet like she did (camera, computer and so on), but I do have a warranties folder so that when I purchase a new equipment or appliance, I just slip the warranties and receipts in an empty sheet and it’s done.

Keeping a New Year’s Resolution comes down to being specific about what we want to achieve. It’s really easier to start with the small and basic things. I have done those three personally and they each jump-started bigger things in my life.

Organizing was the start of my journey to minimalism. What kind of journey will one of them get you started in?
